Saturday 13 October marked Non League Day and the Swans were home in a Southern League South clash with Merthyr Town.
Staines almost made a catastrophic start to the game when Merthyr’s Kerry Morgan sliding shot cannoned wide from close range after just two minutes.
Andy Ali almost made Merthyr pay for this but his outside of the foot shot didn’t trouble the keeper or goal just two minutes later.
Tom Meechan scored his first goal of the game for Merthyr after 13 minutes when his curled strike from the edge of the box found the top right corner of the Swans goal.
Meechan made it 2-0 to Merthyr just 4 minutes later as he was unmarked in the box for a header past Dixon in the Swans net.
Bad went to worse for Staines as it became 3-0 to Merthyr, again at a 4 minute interval with non-existent defending allowing McConnell to slide in to score.
Staines managed to pull a goal back after 27 minutes when Ruudi used good skill to beat the defender and crossed for Thomas Gogo to finish in the far corner.
Merthyr almost made it 4-1 to the visitors as Morgan chipped over the bar within a minute of Staines’ goal.
There was some added Non League Day entertainment for the visiting fans as there was a brief stoppage in play to fix the netting in the Swans’ goal.
Merthyr had another chance on 43 minutes when a free-kick clipped the top of the bar; the score remained 1-3 until half-time.
The Swans had the first opportunity of the second half in the 53rd minute when Gogo skinned the Merthyr fullback but his cross was left begging as nobody was able to get on the end of the cross.
Staines made the keeper work on 74 minutes as Odetola’s sharp shot from the edge of the box was parried away to safety.
Odetola would prove to be influential on 79 minutes when a magnificent piece of skill in his own half took him past two players, allowing him to put Ali through for him to slot past the keeper. The score was now 2-3 and the comeback was very much on.
The Swans comeback lasted all but a minute as a calamitous mixup between defender and goalkeeper, compounded by a further goalkeeper error as he was dispossessed by Meechan, with the result meaning he scored his hat-trick goal into an empty net.
Yet more poor defending from the Swans allowed substitute Traylor to make it 5-2 to Merthyr on 83 minutes.
The rout was completed on 94 minutes as Meechan scored his 4th goal of the game and it finished Staines 2-6 Merthyr.
