Matchday Programme – Staines Town FC VS Hanwell Town FC

Tuesday 29th October 2019 (7:45pm) – BetVictor Isthmian League, Division One South Central

Staines came within a whisker of taking one of the league’s three remaining unbeaten records, and of repeating their dramatic FA Cup victory of the previous month.  It was a cool evening at Wheatsheaf Park, the pitch in good condition, and the home side initially attacking the Penton Hook Road end.  League Chairman Nick Robinson was among the evening’s guests.

Staines were unlucky not to take a 7th minute lead, when Scott Walker wriggled into space in the box but saw his shot come back off the foot of the post, with Ashley Lodge’s follow-up shot blocked by Hugo Sobte in the Hanwell goal.  The first half hour was closely contested, with plenty of slick football, although clear cut chances were at a premium.  However, when the opening goal came on 38 minutes, and it went Hanwell’s way after former Staines forward Jack Hutchinson played in a low ball from the left that was flicked into the far corner of the net by Gareth Chendlik.  Moments before the interval, the visitors broke away again through skipper David Taylor out wide the right.  Louis Dixon came out to cut him off, but mistimed his challenge and was cautioned.

It took Staines only three second half minutes before they scored a super equaliser, Isaac Thompson doing well to keep the ball in play before pulling it back into the centre for Dara Dada-Anité to steady himself and rifle into the bottom corner.  Then followed a long stoppage while Dixon was treated for a leg injury after appearing to be caught by Hanwell’s Taylor as a cross came in.  Thankfully he was able to continue, as Staines did not have a replacement ‘keeper available tonight, and last season’s Player of the Year distinguished himself with some fine saves despite visibly suffering from the knock.  The other former Staines man now wearing Staines colours, Danny Julienne, was cautioned for a foul just 9 minutes after coming on as a sub.  Making his home début, Arif Hattabi achieved what he did on his first away appearance two days earlier, by finding the net – he controlled the ball well and applied an excellent finish to give Staines a deserved lead on 66 minutes.   The game continued at quite a pace, and Simeon Olarerin was yellow carded for delaying a free-kick.  But in the latter stages it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score, and at least twice Staines had occasion to be thankful for brave saves by Dixon, notably turning Harry Rush’s shot around for a corner after he had broken through from midfield.  However, with barely 30 second left on the clock, Hanwell levelled things up, the delight evident in David Taylor as he rammed home from close range following a corner.  The board then went up to indicate an additional 6 minutes, and Staines fans started to fear another Hertford as Hanwell continued to press.  However, their best remaining chance came 2 minutes into stoppage time, when Rush’s powerful free kick was deflected round for another corner.  Staines held out for a very well deserved draw, with a result – and more importantly a performance – that gives hope that this modest climb one place off the foot of the table can be followed by further elevation in the weeks to come.
